Choosing a care home in Sri Lanka from abroad

1 September 2026, 6 min read

Choosing care for a parent is hard. Doing it from London, Melbourne or Toronto is harder.

Start with what your parent needs

Write down what help your parent needs each day: washing, dressing, medication, mobility, memory. This tells you whether you need a residential, assisted or nursing home.

Shortlist by district

Think about who will visit. A home near a sibling or cousin is often better than a nicer home far away.

Check registration

Ask for registration numbers and check them. See our guide on NSE, provincial and PHSRC registration.

Visit, or send someone

  • Visit at mealtimes if you can
  • Talk to residents, not just the manager
  • Ask to see a room that is actually available
